The Birds

Ever since I was a little girl, I have been afraid of birds. When I was about eight years old, I saw Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds for the first time, and it scared the crap out of me. When the movie was over, I was so scared to walk down the hall into the bathroom to go brush my teeth because I thought that a flock of birds were going to tangle themselves in my hair and try to peck my eyes out. I’m sure that’s the response Hitchcock was going for too.

Since then, I haven’t been the biggest fan of birds of any kind. I’m fine looking at them from afar, or when they are in their cages, but the second someone takes their pet bird out for it to fly around the house, or even when I’m out in public with seagulls flying around, I start to panic, especially with those low flyers.

This weekend I went to visit Dara, and she, Colin and I went to the Food, Wine and Jazz Festival. The people who had planned this festival had placed these kite-like birds resembling hawks to try and deter seagulls from littering the grass area, and more than likely, just to keep them away. Well, that concept failed because the gulls were flying very low to the ground. They were landing on the lawn and hovering over the garbage cans as well as people’s heads.

Needless to say, that the afternoon was pretty unpleasant, as I spent the majority of my time looking up to the sky rather than taking in the sights, smells and sounds.

So thank you, Alfred Hitchcock for scarring the living crap out of me time after time, film after film. You sir, were a very talented man.

Nice blog post. Sorry about your “fowl” day.

I used to be afraid of black gloves…also because of a movie.

I 100% loved this movie – I had to watch it in some grade 10 media class I took. Thank goodness for that class – still one of the scariest ever.
