A New Direction for HMV

13 04 2008

Today, out of sheer boredom, I headed to the mall on a mission. I have been listening to a lot of Muse lately and finally decided to do a good thing and legally obtain their music. I walked into HMV expecting to find the same-old, same-old, but to my surprise, I found a new treasure: books.

It was only a small display tucked into the front corner of the store, but I was instantly drawn into the titles. On display were books on Princess Diana, punk, and retro album covers. On the wall were the more interesting books, literature turned into films. Here I found Oil! (There Will be Blood), Marley and Me, some Hannah Montana books, a book about Rolling Stone magazine, and a book from the Shopaholic series, among a few others.

I found this very interesting and very exciting all at the same time. I thought that it was such a great idea bringing in books that films were based on. It will definitely give people the opportunity to read the material first, before they decided to watch the film. I was so captivated by the (small) selection that I actually contemplated purchasing two books, but refrained since I was in the store for another reason.

It will be interesting to see if the sale of books will help or hinder sales at HMV. I’m pretty sure that HMV and Amazon.ca have teamed up, so I guess it was only a matter of time before the sale of literature in the music store was going to happen.

I say bravo to HMV. Anything to get people more interested in reading is alright in my books (no pun intended).

Wow, I can’t even remember the last time I went in HMV as I tend to buy music online! Books on the other hand.. just can’t get enough of them, so yeah, I think this is a step in the right direction too!
